What browser do you use?

New Internet Explorer (IE) vulnerabilities have been exposed by an Israeli hacker. This new hole gives phishers a way to scan the hard drives of Google Desktop users, when the IE browser is used. Apparently there is a flaw in the way IE processes Web pages.

Malicious Websites could steal sensitive information like credit card numbers or passwords from your hard drive when visiting sites where the pages are created with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). These “style sheets” are a quick method some developers use to make the site look uniform with the same fonts and headers on each page (along with other functional appearances).

The hole will allow thieves to scan the hard drives of Google Desktop users and even steal sensitive credit card information you may have stored in your emails (or elsewhere). They can also take your stored password information. This can all be done by reading the Google Desktop Web interface itself.

Firefox all the way! It's not nearly as buggy or vulnerable, it's free, and with the extensions, you can do all kinds of cool stuff, like add in Opera's session functionality! [/corpwhore]

There are some sites I need IE for. Look at the poll results. I almost always use FF and the wife uses Opera.

O.K., folks, to show you how much I respect your opinions, I read this thread tonight and went right out and downloaded Firefox (which is the browser I'm using at this moment as I write this).

I'll try it for awhile and, if it works out, I'll delete AOL Explorer and IE from my hard drive.

Thanks for the tip (I hope).

dave

I think it is OK to delete AOL, but there are times you need IE. There are some pages that only work with IE.

Opera Browser Files Complaint With EC Over Microsoft Internet Explorer – Wants Windows Bundled With Browsers – Comparison With Firefox and Safari

(Best Syndication) Microsoft is under pressure again for the bundled Internet Explorer (IE) web browser. This time Opera Software ASA is accusing the company of “abusing its dominant position by tying its browser.” Opera, the maker of the popular Opera browser went further claiming Microsoft hindered interoperability by not following accepted Web standards.

Opera filed a complaint with the European Commission. "We are filing this complaint on behalf of all consumers who are tired of having a monopolist make choices for them," said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera. In order of popularity, Opera ranks forth behind Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari. Other browsers companies have made similar complaints and Microsoft has announced that they would no longer support IE for Apple products.
