Southbound lanes of Interstate 5 had to be diverted at Calgrove Boulevard onto The Old Road in the Newhall.
Officials warn that delays along the detours could be long.

Motorists and truck drivers can steer clear of the closure of Interstate 5 in Santa Clarita by using a variety of detours and alternate highway routes.
State officials hope to reopen the southbound side of I-5 through Newhall Pass by Tuesday and the northbound lanes by Wednesday. For current information about alternate routes, call Caltrans at (800) 427-ROAD or check www.dot.ca.gov/dist07.
Authorities caution, however, that detours near the accident site, such as State Routes 14 and 126, are expected to be heavily congested, especially during rush hours. After Friday's accident, motorists experienced delays of up to four hours on those routes.
The California Highway Patrol advises motorists and truckers heading to Northern California to consider two options to bypass the Santa Clarita area -- U.S. 101 and a combination of routes to reach U.S. 395.
Those traveling from the Los Angeles area to the Bay Area can take the 101 through Santa Barbara and Salinas. The route, which takes more time than I-5, is a divided highway or freeway the entire distance.
Motorists headed to the San Joaquin Valley or farther north can take Interstate 1-5 north over the Cajon Pass. After clearing the grade, travelers can go west on State Route 138 or use a combination of U.S. 395 and State Route 58 to regain I-5 north of the Grapevine. CHP officials warn motorists that the 138 and the 395 have sections of narrow, two-lane road.
Trucks and cars also can reach the 138 by driving north on I-5 and heading east on State Route 14. Authorities say, however, the detour is likely to be heavily congested by local traffic.
If travelers are headed south on the 5 north of the accident site, they can exit the highway at Calgrove Boulevard and continue south on Calgrove to The Old Road, which becomes San Fernando Road. Proceed south to Sepulveda Boulevard, where the southbound I-5 on-ramp can be reached at Roxford Street.
To get around the immediate Santa Clarita area, motorists can take The Old Road south to Balboa Boulevard or to I-5 at Roxford Street. Another option is to take the Sierra Highway south to Foothill Boulevard and west to Balboa, or go straight to Interstate 210.
To avoid the interchange of the 5 and the 14, motorists can take Placerita Canyon Road west or Sand Canyon south to Little Tujunga Road to Osborne Street. Another option is to take State Route 126 west to Grimes Canyon Road then proceed east on Los Angeles Avenue to State Route 118. _________________

I'm wondering why we should care. _________________ "Trying to determine what is going on in the world by reading newspapers is like trying to tell the time by watching the second hand of a clock." Ben Hecht (1894-1964) |

I see this morning the pass is open for N & S on the 5 & 14.
Nothing like a little rain in LA to mess up a major transportation route. |
