Have you ever thought about buying your own stocks?  Buying stocks online can be less expensive in the buying and selling, however a traditional stock broker can advise you on what stocks to purchase.  You could have both services, as the stock broker may have a already done a lot of research for you.

If you have never purchased stock before you should consider a mutual fund to be your first stock investment.  A mutual fund is a collection of stocks and bonds.  There are many combinations of mutual funds, and they still are not fool proof and you can still lose money.  However, you have a better chance at making money with mutual funds because of diversity.  With diversity you have a better chance at making growth on your investment.  To invest in just one stock is risky business.

All of the information the Broker would use to make a recommendation to you is available online (or at a library) for those willing to do the footwork. Depending on how sizeable your investment is, of course, you can pay a broker thousands to do your homework for you, or you can just do it yourself.

Read a book like Investing for Dummies that gives you an overview of Technical Analysis or The New Buffetology that gives Warren Buffet's perspective (and process) on contrarian investing. Then get up OFF the couch and DO IT.

Pocket that difference in commission and, oh I don't know, send your kid to college or something. Smile

Brokers are little more then "Used Car Salesmen" in better suits.

Never, ever go to a broker.

For 1 thing brokers only sell about half the products available for investment.

Tell your broker you want to buy a "No load Fund" and see how quickly he either tries to talk you out of it or throws you out of his office.

The products they do sell mostly have high load charges or commissions.

They sell what they can make money on with little regard for what is best for you.

Want Proof...

Merrill Lynch sells long term GMAC bonds. Merrill has known for years that GM is losing billions of dollars on car sales and face a real possibility of bankruptcy. But yet they keep peddling, to unsuspecting people, this very risky investment.

This type of thing is very typical with all investment houses.

Next

If you want to make money in the market do not invest online or at least do not trade at all but rather invest.

Trading is little better then going to Vegas.

Put money either in a S&P 500 index fund or a Total Market index fund and then forget about it. Add whatever you can to every month and them forget about that.

Making money is more about good common sense and discipline then if you invest with brokers or online.

BTW....The best deal in town is an employer that offers a 401k where they match your contributions up to about 6%. Now that is a winning proposition.

What you Need to Know about Treasury Notes - How to Buy Sell these Securities
February 1st 2006

Early Note

The United States Government offers several methods of investing.  Investors can buy Treasury Bills, Treasury Notes and Bonds.  This article will focus on Treasury Notes.  These Notes earn a fixed rate of interest every six months until maturity.

Treasury Notes are issued for 2, 3, 5 and 10 year terms. Notes can be purchased from the U.S. government through their TreasuryDirect and Legacy Treasury Direct programs.  Treasury Notes can also be purchased through banks and brokers.

Only individuals are allowed to hold TreasuryDirect accounts.  Notes can be held until maturity or can be sold before that point.  You can buy these through either the competitive or noncompetitive bidding process.
